Mount Kilimanjaro - Tanzania

Tips

This is the shortest route to reach Uhuru Peak of Mount Kilimanjaro and the only one with hut accommodations. Due to the short duration of only five to six days, there isn’t much time to acclimatize to the altitude making this particular route have the highest failure rate of all the trails. This is also the option that uses the same path going up and coming back down meaning it can get crowded. July to September is the best time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro while the weather is the most stable.Source: Climbing-kilimanjaro.com

Variations

There are many other routes up Mount Kilimanjaro, though all will require tent camping. The Lemosho route and Machame route have the highest success rate for summiting and span over seven to eight days. As far as scenery goes, the Lemosho route is known to have spectacular vistas in every direction. The Rongai route is the best choice for quiet hiking away from crowds, though the success rate is lower. The most challenging way up Mount Kilimanjaro is by taking the crater camp option.

History

Mount Kilimanjaro's peaks were formed after volcanic eruptions several million years ago. Kibo is the tallest of the volcanos and is now home to the Uhuru peak, which is the target of this trek. The name of Kilimanjaro is all speculation, but the local peoples call it 'Mountain of Greatness' in Swahili or 'The mountain of Water' in Maasai, as it's a water source for the area.
